This article assumes you have basic doom editing skills.

  1. Create a reference (or dummy) sector - typically 3 linedefs to create a trianglar sector, the size of the dummy sector does not matter.
  2. Put the floor of the dummy sector at the height you want the bottom of your 3D block to be, the ceiling at the height of the top of the 3D floor.
  3. Set the floor textures to what you want on the top and bottom of the 3D block, and the light level to what you want below the 3D floor.
  4. Now make one of the lines of the dummy sector type 281 and tag it to the sector you want to have a 3D floor in. Put the texture you want the sides of your 3D block to be in the center texture slot of the line you made type 281.

To make a partly transparent 3D block follow the exact steps above but use the 300 linetype instead of the 281

If you use linetype 289, your 3D floor will not have an effect on the lightlevel of the sector below it.
